Virgilijus Garast was born on April 28, 1959, he was a coach for a short time, but he did not stay away from basketball – he played in the Kaunas basketball amateur league.
V. Garast died unexpectedly last week in Cologne, in the German city he supported the Lithuanian men’s basketball team, which fought in the group B match of the European Basketball Championship held in this city.
“In the hour of painful loss, on behalf of all basketball fans, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s parents Vlad and Irena, sister Jolanta, Virginij’s son Vladas, Rokas Garastus and their families, all relatives, friends, neighbors and acquaintances.
Nothing hurts more when long-lived parents have to bury their children. Strength and God’s blessings to them”, famous basketball journalist Vidas Mačiulis wrote on Facebook on the day of V. Garast’s death.
In addition to the relatives of the deceased, the president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) Vydas Gedvilas also participated in the funeral ceremony.
LKF general secretary Mindaugas Balčiūnas and coach Ramūnas Butautas also came to say goodbye to V. Garast.
Basketball veterans of “Kaunas Žalgiris” football team, coached by V. Garast’s son Rokas, team members, family friends also took part in the ceremony.
